30 super spellers from Douglas County School System schools participated in this year’s event.

Top spellers from district elementary and middle schools participated last week in the annual Douglas County Spelling Bee. Chisa Ihekwereme, an 8th grader at Mason Creek Middle School, was named overall winner by correctly spelling F-0-N-D-A-N-T in the 15th round of competition! She’s no stranger to the competition, having won third place last year. Runner-up was Subasakti Chandrasekaran from Fairplay Middle School, with Paul Okeh from Mt. Carmel Elementary School taking third place.

A sampling of words students had to spell are dissolvent, attendee, centipede, haughty, Himalayan and Antarctic.

The competition was at Citizens Hall at the Douglas County Courthouse where parents, teachers, principals, Superintendent Trent North and County Commission Chair Dr. Romona Jackson Jones cheered on the participants.

Later this month, Ihekwereme and Chandrasekaran will participate in the GAE Region 4 Spelling Bee at the Decatur Library auditorium. From there, winners will move on to the GAE State Spelling Bee in March at Georgia State University. State winners move on to the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee this spring.
