DCSS Board Members Earn GSBA Exemplary Status

Douglas County School System Superintendent Trent North is proud to announce that Douglas County Schools are being served by a Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) 2019 Exemplary School Board.

The recognition program was designed to showcase best practices in school governance and leadership. GSBA recognizes good school board governance as a way to foster educational community cultures and advance student learning and achievement.

Douglas County Board of Education members Chair Tracy Rookard, Vice Chair Michelle Simmons, Devetrion Caldwell, D.T. Jackson, and Jeff Morris worked together, and in less than a year, achieved a distinction shared by less than a third of Georgia School Boards. The Georgia School Board Association awarded the 2019 Exemplary Board distinction to the Douglas County School Board for meeting and exceeding the criteria set forth by GSBA during the GSBA and Georgia School Superintendents Association Conference in Savannah on June 7 and 8.

Achieving the Georgia School Board Exemplary Status Recognition is a three-tier process. The three recognition levels are Quality, Distinguished and Exemplary. Criteria for receiving exemplary board status include an implemented System Strategic Plan that includes balanced scorecards on completing district goals.

Superintendent North is excited that the board’s leadership skills and commitment to public education have been recognized on a statewide level.  “This status is just one of many steps our school board has taken to advance student learning and achievement. By showing proficiency in strategic planning, fiscal responsibility, and ethics, our board members can better serve our school system and our students. This honor has emboldened us to continue our work providing a world-class education to every student.”

The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the State Board of Education’s standards for effective governance. In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.
