Book lovers at South Douglas Elementary School can now take a stroll down “The Literacy Lane” StoryWalk.
The interactive StoryWalk combines reading a children’s book with physical activity and was funded by a Classroom Impact Grant awarded to media specialist Ana Leibbrand by the Douglas County Education Foundation.
The new StoryWalk stations were installed throughout the SDES campus in February.
Books featured along Literacy Lane are typically changed out every few weeks, often seasonally, to keep things fresh and engaging, Leibbrand said. The StoryWalk features mostly picture books and includes physical exercises and outdoor activities connected to the book’s theme.
Leibbrand said the response from the SDES community has been positive, noting that students and teachers “really enjoy spending time outside and enjoying the books and activities.”
“I am so thankful to the Douglas County Education Foundation for the classroom impact grant to create this StoryWalk on our school campus,” Leibbrand said. “My school community is enjoying taking strolls around the campus while being engaged in a great book and fun activities. It has allowed students to interact with each other and to get some exercise while still learning and impacting their achievement. It has been a great addition to our school.”
