Alexander golf coach Ben Robinson said he has been looking forward to this season for a long time.
The Cougars are led by seniors Hayden Canary and Ricky Thomas, both of whom have been with Robinson since they were eighth-graders on the JV squad.
“Both of them came in with a lot of potential and promise,” Robinson said. “Ricky's nickname early on was ‘The Future.’ Well, the future is now. And, you know, I fully expect those two to lead us not just to a state berth, but a top-five finish at state.”
On the girls’ side, senior Raelyn De La Rosa and junior Braylee Clark lead Alexander.
“I expect the two of them to battle it out this year for the county championship and bring home the team championship,” Robinson said, adding that he expects the girls’ team to make a state appearance as well.
Canary is also eyeing an individual state title during the two-round Georgia High School Association State Championships on May 19-20. The boys’ will play at Pine Lakes Golf Course on Jekyll Island while the girls will play at Sea Island Retreat Golf Course on St. Simons Island.
“Golf's a funny sport, and you can have your day and you can not have your day,” Robinson said. “As long as we play up to our potential, we have potential for a top-five finish. If we can play a little bit better than our potential, the sky's the limit.”
