The Cougars lost just one athlete from last year to graduation and return a host of athletes who placed at state last year.

They've already won the county championship this season, collecting 219 points.

Coaches Jimmy Sorrells and Jeremy Williams highlighted four athletes during the recent Spring Sports Media Day.

Justyn McKenzie and Cayden Guidry are junior long-distance and relay runners. Both placed at state last year in relay events and the 800-meter run, and both have their sights set on winning a state title in the 800 this year.

“We're hoping that it goes 1-2 this year,” Sorrells said. “Whatever order it comes to be, as long asAHS boys runner it's first and second.”

Sorrells said the two should also anchor relay teams.

Senior Zach Porter is another key returner in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

And sophomore Robert Black is the Cougars’ top returning thrower. Black placed sixth at state in the discus last year as a freshman, and Williams said he expects Black to break the school record this year.
