Designed to foster a supportive environment for students’ social and emotional development, families engaged in interactive activities and discussions to learn and practice SEL skills. Topics included mindfulness, coping skills, bullying prevention and friendship.

Families enjoyed a warm, welcoming atmosphere as they shared Italian cuisine and gained valuable insights into GMAS and how to interpret scores. Following the meal, attendees participated in five breakout sessions focused on critical topics such as anger management, coping skills, managing worry, understanding feelings, and incorporating exercise into daily routines.

AWES counselor and event organizer Dr. Corlissa Wilson aimed to equip parents and students with healthy practical strategies to manage emotions both at home and in school.

“We believe this event offers a refreshing experience for our students and families,” Dr. Wilson said.

“Social-emotional learning is so important to everyone’s well-being because it fosters lifelong skills for school, home, and the workplace. And just like with academics, when you involve families in social-emotional learning initiatives, you’ll see better outcomes. I hope this is the first of many SEL Family Nights,” she added.
