SWES at TomeCon

Literary scholars in the Douglas County School System were recently recognized for their FSMS student at TomeConexceptional successes during the TomeCon Conference, a popular book festival held annually in Athens, Georgia.

The exciting event gave students in grades two through 12 the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of reading and writing.

“At TomeCon, our students met real authors from all over the country,” said Factory Shoals Middle School Media Specialist Katrina Barnett.

“They listened to writers talk about their books and even got to ask questions. Many students bought new books and had them signed by the authors, which was super exciting,” she added.

A highlight of the event was a hands-on workshop where students learned how to create their own graphic novels, demonstrating that storytelling is about more than just words — “pictures can tell stories too,” emphasized Barnett.

While most of the day was focused on learning, the event concluded with special awards distributed to several outstanding DCSS students for their writing and artwork.

Barnett expressed her excitement about the overall experience saying, “This proves that our schools are doing a great job teaching kids to be creative. TomeCon was more than just a field trip — it was a chance for students to see that reading and writing can be fun and lead to exciting careers. The students returned to school feeling inspired and ready to create their own stories.”
