Mount Carmel Elementary students and families recently explored the world of STEM, taking a deeper dive into science, technology, engineering and math. The exciting event featured hands-on learning designed to encourage interactive learning.
Principal Dr. Tenia Boone expressed her support for STEM Night, emphasizing the many benefits it offers to students and their academic success.
"STEM Night is important because it gives students the opportunity to see firsthand how science and technology will shape their futures," said Dr. Boone. "It’s also a wonderful chance for families to engage with one another while participating in fun, hands-on activities."
Throughout the evening, students and parents had the chance to test the laws of gravity and build rocket ships, working together in the classroom to bring STEM concepts to life. These activities sparked curiosity while strengthening the connection between students, parents and teachers.
Adding to the excitement, Greystone Power Corporation introduced their safety trailer, offering students a fascinating look at how electricity is generated and delivered to their homes. They also provided essential lessons on electrical safety, helping students understand the importance of responsible energy use.
The Douglas County Farm Bureau was also in attendance, demonstrating the important role of science in agriculture. Students were able to see firsthand how science contributes to food growth and even had the opportunity to taste a variety of fresh vegetables.
Another highlight of the evening was the participation of students from Douglas County's College and Career Institute who led engaging demonstrations on forensic science, including fingerprinting techniques and discussed the importance of cybersecurity. Their presentations helped younger students see how careers in technology are shaping the future and impacting their lives today.
Dr. Boone described the event as a tremendous success.
“It was a fun-filled and educational evening for all who attended,” she said. “Students and families left with a deeper appreciation for STEM and the many ways it influences our daily lives.”
Meanwhile, Burnett Elementary School also embraced the excitement of STEM Night, uniting participants for an unforgettable experience. Principal Khalilah Allen shared her excitement about the school community’s participation.
“STEM Night at Burnett Elementary was an exciting and engaging experience for our students and families,” she said. “Science for Everyone provided interactive, hands-on activities that sparked curiosity and made learning fun. Seeing our students explore STEM in such a dynamic way highlights the importance of fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, and math in our community.”
