Eighth-grade students from all eight middle schools in the Douglas County School System recently had the opportunity to explore various pathways to achievement at the 8th Grade Passport to Success event.
Roughly 2,100 eighth-grade students explored 29 booths during the event on February 13 at Legacy Arena, gaining valuable information while exploring career pathways, touring career opportunities, and imagining future careers.
Some of the area’s biggest employers were in attendance, including Google, Yancey Brothers, GreyStone Power, the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department, and the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority.
Additionally, several high school groups and clubs were represented, including JROTC, DECA, FBLA, HOSA, FFA, FCCLA, and Alexander High School’s “Teaching as a Pathway” program, led by DCSS Teacher of the Year Brooke Morris.
“Sponsored by Partners in Education (PIE), this event plays a key role in preparing eighth-graders for high school by offering insights into potential career pathways and academic opportunities,” said Tekmekia Gilchrist, Executive Director of CTAE/6-12 Curriculum for DCSS. “It allows students to explore different fields, engage with organizations, and gain a clearer understanding of the high school experience.”
