Students at Stewart Middle School recently experienced a special surprise when former Atlanta Hawks player, Mario West, escorted them to the Hawks vs. Raptors game. West is the founder of the Mario West Foundation and a proud former Stewart Eagle.
During the event, West delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing how basketball instills teamwork, resilience and leadership—qualities that extend beyond the court and into everyday life.
“In order for a team to reach a goal, they must show resilience, be able to bounce back from failure, as well as understand effective leadership strategies that can be used both on and off the court,” West said.
In addition to his mentorship, West is the author of “Defend the Dream,” a book that guides young people through challenges while encouraging them to stay focused on their goals.
The Mario West Foundation is committed to providing a combination of mentorship, resources, and opportunities for action, but also takes the necessary steps to help students achieve their dreams. Additionally, the foundation distributes annual scholarships to students who are currently enrolled at his alma mater Douglas County High School.
Several Stewart Middle School staff members were praised for organizing the memorable experience, and Principal Dr. Kevin Jefferson expressed his sincere gratitude for the opportunity.
“Thank you to the Atlanta Hawks for their hospitality," he said. "Let’s go Hawks!”
