CHHS students making animal toys

Chapel Hill High School Beta Club members completed their January service initiative with a CHHS students making animal toysproject that combined sustainability with community service. Old T-shirts were collected and repurposed into durable rope toys for the animals awaiting their forever homes at the Douglas County Animal Shelter. This hands-on project kept fabric waste out of landfills while the newly created toys will provide hours of amusement and comfort for shelter animals. The toys, along with donations of cat and dog food, were recently delivered to the shelter.

Beta Club Sponsor Rhiannon Sims said, “I strive to teach students that even small actions can have a big impact. This project not only gave new life to discarded materials but also provided to the community. The students were so proud of their finished projects. Many were elated to have created something tangible that could be put to immediate good use."

National Beta encourages and upholds the ideals of service within schools and communities as a way for clubs to demonstrate the motto: Let Us Lead By Serving Others. Community service teaches members how to organize service projects, strengthens ties to the community, and emphasizes teamwork within the club.
