Students in Savannah Jackson’s classes at Chapel Hill Middle School took a step toward their future during College and Career Readiness Week—trying on her Kennesaw State University graduation gown and discussing their own college and career goals.
“We talk a lot about college in my classroom,” said Jackson, who teaches seventh-grade English/Language Arts. “I think it's because I'm still in my master's program and I just graduated in May, so the kids ask me a lot about it. One of them asked me on Monday if I was going to bring my gown, and I thought it was a great opportunity for them to have a glimpse at what the end result is if they work hard and apply themselves.”
In addition to posing for pictures in her black and gold-trimmed gown, Jackson’s students also discussed their future college and career aspirations.
Jackson said her students participate in special “CATS Quotes,” which she describes as “prompting quotes” that encourage deeper thinking.
For College and Career Readiness Week, she selected themed CATS Quotes for each day.
For Military Day, the CATS Quote was, “Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease done something worth remembering," by Theodore Roosevelt. Jackson said the best student response was, “Nothing is worth remembering without struggling first."
“Overall, I think the week was a great success,” Jackson said. “We talked a lot about college and other potential paths to success outside of the traditional route.”
