The Douglas County School System’s School Nutrition Department recently turned lunch at
Chapel Hill High School into a cultural adventure, giving students and staff the opportunity to sample chicken curry in celebration of National Chicken Curry Day.
In addition to the samples, chicken curry was offered as an entrée in the cafeteria as part of the special event. The day was advertised with posters and morning announcements and coincided with Taco Day, a perennial favorite among students.
According to Jazmine Powell, Menu Specialist for the Douglas County School System, students and staff were excited to try the dish and provided positive feedback. One administrator even submitted a glowing review, suggesting chicken curry be served again.
Powell highlighted the event as one of many special menu days in the district.
“We celebrate Harvest of the Month, which highlights a different seasonal fruit or vegetable each month,” Powell said. “We also organize fun events like Super Bowl celebrations.”
Powell added that School Nutrition is actively working to include more national food celebration days across the district’s schools.
