HHS Speech and Debate members Christian Simmons, Alyssa Blacknall and Claire Craton

Three Chapel Hill High School Speech and Debate members have qualified for next month’s Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Varsity State Championships in Carrollton.

Claire Craton qualified in Original Oratory, while Alyssa Blacknall and Christian Simmons earned their spot in Public Forum Debate after dominating at the Peach State Classic in November. Craton, who qualified for nationals last year, placed second in her category, and Blacknall and Simmons went undefeated in six rounds, finishing first in debate.

“These three students exemplify what it means to be dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about their craft,” said CHHS Magnet Coordinator and Speech and Debate Coach Kenya Taylor. “Their countless hours of research, practice, and preparation have paid off in incredible ways.”

To reach the state competition, Taylor said students were required to attend at least two invitational tournaments that met state championship requirements.

Blacknall and Simmons debated the resolution “The United States should substantially reduce its military support of Taiwan,” at the Peach State Classic. At state, they’ll take on a new resolution: “The United States should accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.”

Craton’s Original Oratory speech at the Peach State Classic, “Breaking the Glass: Unveiling the Silent Struggles of Glass Child Syndrome,” reflects her passion for mental health and her future aspirations as a psychologist. The speech impressed judges with its blend of research, emotional appeal and humor.

“Beyond their accomplishments as students and team members, they are amazing people, and I am very proud of the young adults they are becoming,” Taylor said.
