NMHS wrestlers Tantiana Loper and Nickeo Cabrera

First-year New Manchester wrestling coach Wilford Smith, along with longtime assistant coach Donald Beacham, is optimistic about a standout season for both the boys and girls teams.

The Jaguars boast a wealth of talent, headlined by senior Nickeo Cabrera, the boys’ all-time leading wrestler, and senior Tantiana Loper, who started the season with a goal of reaching 100 career wins.

“I have nothing but praise and respect for what they bring to the mat and this sport,” Smith said.

Cabrera, a region champion and two-time state alternate, wrestles at 138 and 144 pounds. Entering his senior season, he had 85 career wins.

Loper, also a region champion, competes at 170 and 190 pounds. She began her senior year with 65 career victories.

The coaches also highlighted several other key athletes:

  • Amiyah “Tiny” Rice (sophomore): A region champion and state alternate last season who placed in sectionals.

  • Alexandria Lee (senior): A three-year wrestler and regional placer competing at 145 pounds.

  • Mial Copeland (senior): A four-year wrestler and multi-season regional and sectional placer, competing at 157 and 165 pounds.

  • Elijah Parker (senior): A two-year wrestler and regional fourth-place finisher at 150 pounds.

“We’ve had some outstanding wrestlers come through this program, and I only think we’re going to continue to be successful,” Smith added.
