AP English Literature and Composition students at Chapel Hill High School started their spring semester with an engaging "book tasting" event organized by teacher Morgan Murphy.
During the book tasting, seniors rotated through five tables, each featuring a different text. Students sampled literature through movie trailers, plot synopses, and carefully selected passages. Throughout the event, their teacher encouraged peer discussion.
“I've seen ideas for book tasting activities and events all over the internet for a few years now,” said Ms. Murphy. “However, they've always been with younger students." She came back to the idea after brainstorming ways to hook her high school students. The book tasting, she explains, was a way to get students excited, intrigued, and motivated to read the extended texts they will explore in the course.
The event was a tremendous success. "Students were genuinely intrigued, making comments like 'this sounds interesting!' and 'I think I will like this book,'" Ms. Murphy shared. "They even tried to convince me to reveal some endings, but I encouraged them to discover the stories for themselves."
