Douglas County’s swim team is led by seniors Isabella Ortega and Preston Thorpe.
Ortega is the swim team captain and said her best stroke is probably the 200-meter freestyle. Ortega won the 200 freestyle at the county meet last year and hopes to repeat in that event and add a title in the 100 freestyle as well.
“This year, I think we're going to do really well,” Ortega said at the recent Winter Sports Media Day. “Although we are probably one of the smaller teams, we're all looking to improve ourselves and just have fun.”
Thorpe has been swimming since his freshman year and excels in the freestyle and backstroke events. He said his goal for the year is to get his 50 freestyle time down from 32 seconds into the 29-second range.
“Even though our team is small, we really do go out there and swim with all our heart,” he said.
