A group of bowlers at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

Southern Lanes Bowling Alley was recently buzzing with excitement, as the Program for Exceptional Children took part in the annual Special Olympics Bowling Tournament. Students representing all five high school programs joined in the fun, bowling with their peers and creating lasting memories.

“The Special Olympics Bowling Tournament showcases all that is good about inclusion, “ said Tracy Long, CBI/ID Facilitator and event host. “Athletes with intellectual disabilities exercise, compete, and socialize in a fun and supportive environment. Our student athletes are able to apply the skills being learned in classrooms while out in their community.”

Each year, the dedicated team at Southern Lanes Bowling Center proudly supports this event by offering discounts to Special Olympics of Georgia-Douglas County Schools, covering the bowling expenses for each athlete.

The bowling extravaganza concludes with an awards ceremony, where “the cheers for the 5th place winners are as enthusiastic as the cheers given to the 1st place winners,” said Long. Long expressed excitement to see each student’s determination and the love shared between classmates and former teachers.

“It leaves me inspired every time. Our Special Olympics Bowling event is more than a tournament! It’s a celebration!”

With parent/guardian permission, the student-athletes also had the opportunity to receive a free physical while in attendance. Long expressed sincere gratitude to local chiropractor, Dr. Heather Camp for graciously dedicating her time to ensure the students met the Special Olympics of Georgia requirements.

By hosting a total of seven Special Olympics Bowling and Physical Combo events this school year, Long agrees the PEC community is creating endless opportunities for students to grow, connect and compete.
