Mason Creek Elementary students kicked off the holiday season with a festive skate party full of fun and fellowship, bringing the school community together to share in the holiday cheer. The school worked with Skatetime School Programs to offer an engaging ‘Fitness on Wheels’ skating unit designed to benefit students of all ages.
Physical Education Teacher Lindsay Hurley hosted the exciting celebration during P.E. class from December 4 through 18. “Skatetime provided everything,” she said. “All I had to do was supply them with shoe sizes.”
With a goal to introduce an activity that will last a lifetime, the organization provides the equipment and tools each student needs to participate, along with a step-by-step guide, including lesson plans, an instruction manual and free video.
Hurley explained, "Skatetime has offered an incredible opportunity for our students at Mason Creek. Over the past few weeks, we've not only improved our cardio and muscular endurance, but we've also gained a solid understanding of basic skating techniques.” She added, "It's been such a joy to witness their progress each day, especially as they have fun skating with their peers and teachers—yes, even the teachers are joining in on the fun!”
Hurley expressed gratitude to the Mason Creek families for their generous support.
“We're incredibly thankful to our Mason Creek families. Several have gone above and beyond by donating extra funds to sponsor other students," she said. "We're already excited to be planning a 'Skate n Date' themed night for February! This experience has truly been a blessing, and we can't wait to do it all over again next year!"
Research suggests skating offers students a range of benefits, promoting cardiovascular health, improving balance, coordination, focus, and concentration. It also provides an opportunity for students to develop social skills and form new friendships.
Overall, skate benefits stretch beyond the rink, helping students in various aspects of their lives.
