The holiday spirit is in full swing in the Douglas County School System, as families enjoy Christmas concerts, festive parties and banquets, and even a special visit from that famous red-nosed reindeer.
Students from Alexander High School, Bill Arp Elementary and South Douglas Elementary brought the 1964 Rankin-Bass stop motion classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” to life Monday and Tuesday at the AHS Performing Arts Center.
Tim Plumley, a counselor at AHS who served as one of the directors for “Rudolph,” shared that this marks the second year Alexander students have teamed up with elementary students from feeder schools on the performance, which featured all the familiar songs and characters from the beloved classic.
“We even use puppets to represent the Misfit Toys and have a 12-foot tall Abominable Snow Monster that is operated by three high school students,” said Plumley, whose wife, Katie, also served as a director on “Rudolph” and is the music teacher and 2024-25 Teacher of the Year at Bill Arp. “It really is a sight to see!”
The holidays also brought families together at Holly Springs Elementary and Turner Middle, where special meals were hosted for parents and their children.
North Douglas Elementary held a Winter Wonderland-themed Literacy Night in partnership with its K-2 Chorus Concert. Families were treated to festive holiday selections performed by students, filling the air with holiday cheer led by music teacher Brycen Hart. The evening also included activities for each grade level, the West Georgia Public Library Bookmobile, a magical Winter Wonderland-themed read-aloud and resources from Waterford.
“It was a night of music, reading, and community connection that celebrated the season while fostering a love for literacy,” Media Specialist Alexis McDaniels said.
At Factory Shoals Middle, the 100 Black Men of Douglasville visited Monday to provide holiday gifts for students.
And let’s not forget about the Grinch! The green, furry Dr. Seuss character made an appearance at Arbor Station Elementary School this week for “December to Remember Grinch Day,” with students and staff donning their favorite Grinch sweaters, sweatshirts and hats.
Media Specialist Katrina Barnett said Factory Shoals is grateful to the group for their kindness, generosity and commitment to uplifting youth.
“This generous act not only brought joy to our students but also reinforced the importance of community involvement and support,” Barnett said.
