In just a few short weeks, the Douglas County School System will begin preparations to crown another District Spelling Bee champion. The annual competition, held in January, recognizes outstanding spellers from the district’s elementary, middle and charter schools. Top students will advance to the regional and state competitions.
“This is a great opportunity for our district to celebrate the academic achievement of our students and promote healthy competition among our students,” explained Dawn Taylor, DCSS Director of Literacy.
Congratulations to all our school-level winners who have earned the opportunity to participate in the upcoming District Spelling Bee, including Malauni Laundry (Chestnut Log Middle School), Nolan and Colton Miller (Fairplay Middle School) and Aiden P. (Mount Carmel Elementary).
Chestnut Log’s Talib Anderson clinched the first-place trophy in the 2024 District Spelling Bee, while Mason Creek Middle School sixth-grader Earlene Igbeare finished as runner-up and Fairplay Middle School’s Dheephaasakti Chandrasekaran secured third place.
The 2025 spelling bee is set to take place at Alexander High School’s Performing Arts Center on Thursday, January 16, at 9 a.m.
