New Manchester girls basketball coach Vincent Parks said his goal for the year is to win the region and make a state playoff run.
The Lady Jaguars are led by seniors Paige Fears, Kyara Lawrence and Amorie Strachan and sophomore Devin Furgess.
Fears, who starts at point guard, has played all four years. Parks said he expects a lot from Fears this year as one of the floor generals.
Lawrence, a multisport standout, is in her third season with the Lady Jaguars. Parks said she’s probably the most athletic player on the team and will be asked to be a scorer, defender and rebounder while playing point guard, shooting guard and small forward.
Strachan plays power forward and is New Manchester’s main weapon inside. Parks said she’s improved on offense and defense and will see an increase in offensive load.
Ferguss plays point guard and shooting guard, and Parks calls her his best shooter.
Parks also gave a shout-out to junior guard Andrea Guilford, who made the all-state team last year but will miss this season while recuperating from an injury.
“She's a vital part of this team even though she won't be playing this year, and she will truly be missed,” he said.
Parks said he always wants his players to be leaders and to teach the younger players on the team.
Looking at the region, he said Rome, Alexander and Villa Rica are formidable opponents.
“Every year we expect to win the region and try to go as far as we can in the state playoffs,” he said.
