Napoleon Bowen grew up attending Eastside Elementary and welcomes the opportunity to give back to the school.
Bowen was one of more than 25 male mentors from the community who read to students at the school for the 8th Annual Real Men Read event on Nov. 8.
“He felt a sense of pride knowing that he was able to come back to the school to read to the students,” Eastside Principal Timothy Jenkins said of Bowen. “He loved Eastside as a student and still has the same love and passion for the school.”
Eastside Media Specialist, Dr. Linda James, carefully selected books tailored to each grade level. As the male mentors entered the library, they could either choose a book from Dr. James’s curated selection or receive guidance from a student ambassador. With their book in hand, each mentor then read to a class at the school.
Jenkins said he’s had the great fortune of hosting the Real Men Read program every year he’s been at Eastside and looks forward to bringing it back again next year.
“The Real Men Read program is about more than just books; it’s about showing students that learning is a lifelong journey and that knowledge is empowering,” Jenkins said. “Having positive male role models in schools encourages young minds to see themselves reflected in those who lead with respect, integrity, and curiosity. When students witness men valuing education, they’re inspired to embrace reading and learning with confidence. These role models reinforce the belief that strong character and a commitment to growth are essential foundations for success in life.”
