The Incomparable Marching Tiger Band of Douglas County High School has seen unprecedented growth over the past three years, Director of Bands Torre Goodson said.
That growth has included a more competitive division and plenty of success.
The band was recently named Grand Champions of the Jaguar Classic at New Manchester High School, earning superior ratings across every caption while sweeping Class 4A and the competition overall.
As part of their big win, Douglas County also received superior rating and first place in Class 4A for Drum Major, Percussion, Guard, Dance and Band.
And the Incomparable Tigerettes took home first place overall Danceline, while Douglas County’s Blue Steel Percussion section and Drum Majors were awarded first place overall.
Douglas County is led by its senior corps of drum majors, including Mason Mifflin, Olivia Earl, Lisa Obioma and Phillip Green.
Goodson said that in addition to performing, drum majors are also leaders on the field, guiding music rehearsals and executing formations and on-field transitions.
He said that all four of his drum majors are “extremely well-rounded students that excel on and off the field.”
Mifflin is in the International Baccalaureate program, plays clarinet and earned a perfect score on the ACT as a junior. Earl is a percussionist who has a 4.0 GPA and was recently honored for her perfect score on the American Literature EOC. Obioma plays the flute and is also a high-ranking officer in the DCHS ROTC program. And Green is a saxophone player with a 3.6 GPA who is also involved in several clubs at the school.
“The drum majors are leaders in every sense of the word and are integral not only to the band, but to the school community at large,” Goodson said.
Goodson said The Incomparable Marching Tiger Band is part of a “robust instrumental music program” at DCHS. In addition to the Marching Band program, students also participate in one of two concert bands, jazz band, small ensembles, and a number of regional Honor Bands, including GMEA All-State and UGA Janfest.
DC’s Marching Band is the “most visible facet” of the music program, Goodson said, participating in regional parades, community events, high school athletic events and marching band competitions.
