Chestnut Log Middle School’s Media Center has a new way to ignite a passion for reading in students. The school is inspiring young readers through Literacy Bingo, a new contest that combines the joy of reading with engaging learning activities.
Literacy Bingo allows students to choose their books and complete reading-related tasks to fill out their bingo cards. Participating in the contest adds an element of fun to reading and helps students engage in the school’s literacy programs, like Sora and Beanstack.
Advanced ELA teacher Lindsay Lucas is excited about Literacy Bingo. “It has been a great way to engage students in independent reading choices,” Lucas said.
Teachers across grade levels encourage students to participate, and winners are rewarded for their hard work with a lunch sponsored by Principal Angela Holley. The game has been successful, with students throughout the school visiting the media center to choose books and complete their cards.
Kassey Jackson, a sixth grader and one of the first students to complete her card, shared her experience, “Literacy Bingo gave us a chance to participate in something, and it was fun,” she explained. “It allowed us to read without it being boring. I loved it!”
Antonio Cruz, the very first student to complete their bingo card, said, “It was really fun to do, especially because I was able to choose which books I read. I liked looking for different types of books to complete my bingo card.”
Students and staff are enjoying the contest, and the Chestnut Log Media Center looks forward to hosting it again in the spring.
