Beulah Elementary School has introduced "Fresh Air Fridays," a monthly program created to enhance Social Emotional Learning through outdoor activities.
The fun initiative kicked off last Friday to invest in student mental well-being and health.
Principal Wiley Dailey explains, "Our staff collaborated with our Parent Teacher Organization to bring this event to students. Together, we implemented Fresh Air Fridays to 'get students outside to help them feel better inside' by creating space to interact, play, and enjoy the outdoors," he said.
Students participate in Fresh Air Fridays by exhibiting positive behaviors throughout the month. During Fresh Air Friday, students participate in various activities, including obstacle courses, volleyball, popsicles, and hula hooping. "This occurs during their regular specials time, so no instructional time is lost," Principal Dailey notes.
A small percentage of students are only eligible to participate in some Fresh Air Fridays components. These students receive small group and individual counseling with professional school counselors and the principal. In these sessions, students discuss behavior improvement and academic strategies for achieving Fresh Air Fridays the following month.
To encourage positive behavior throughout the year, Beulah Elementary School has implemented weekly incentives to monitor student behavior, academics, and attendance.
"Fresh Air Fridays has been a tremendous success," Principal Dailey says. "We look forward to continuing this monthly activity with a focus on Social Emotional Learning," Dailey adds.
