Sweetwater Elementary School fifth-grade teachers Lea Jones and Brittany Smith recently organized a Book Tasting activity for their students to spark interest in books, aligning with the launch of the new Beanstack reading platform.
Students tasted a variety of books such as “Walk the Moons,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Wonder,” “Harriet the Spy,” “If,” “The Day You Begin,” and National Geographic informational books.
They also completed a book tasting brochure as part of the activity, sampling five books and then answering questions on the brochure to increase their reading comprehension. They also held a “Book Talk” session.
No Book Tasting is complete without food. The Sweetwater students enjoyed snacks like chips, juice, donuts, popcorn and candy, which allowed them to mingle, discuss their favorite books and enjoy the company of their classmates, the teachers said.
“Our book tasting was a feast for the mind,” Jones said. “Seeing my students so excited to share their favorite books and discover new ones was truly rewarding. It's a great reminder that reading can be a fun and engaging experience for everyone."
Smith added: “What I enjoyed most about this lesson was seeing my students so excited and engaged with the books. It's so rewarding to watch them discover new authors and genres and develop a lifelong love of reading.”
