Alexander High School CTAE teacher Brooke Morris has been named the 2024-2025 Douglas County School System Teacher of the Year.
Morris, a 10-year veteran educator who teaches the Early Childhood Education and Teaching as a Profession pathways at AHS, was recognized along with the 34 other school-level Teachers of the Year by Superintendent Trent North during the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Thursday night at Alexander’s Performing Arts Center.
Morris, a Douglas County native and AHS grad, rose to the top in the months-long judging process during which 12 judges, including DCSS educators and community members, scored applications from all 35 school-level TOTYs and sat in on in-person classroom observations and in-person interviews with the six semifinalists.
One judge wrote that Morris is an “enthusiast about education and her students,” “thinks outside of the box” and is a “ray of sunshine.”
Another judge pointed to Morris’ annual “Future Educators Signing Day” for students who plan to pursue teaching as a career in noting that Morris “believes education should be honored and recognized as a worthy profession.”
“Her ideas are ingenious and stimulating, all with the students’ experience at the heart of what she does,” the judge wrote.
Two other exceptional educators were recognized at the banquet as TOTY finalists — Bill Arp Elementary School music teacher Katie Plumley was named the Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Chapel Hill Middle School health and physical education teacher Wynne Lougher was named the Middle School Teacher of the Year.
In addition to Morris, Lougher and Plumley, other semifinalists for DCSS Teacher of the Year were Michelle Hill from Winston Elementary School, Felicia Pope from Stewart Middle School and Andrew Mulkey from New Manchester High School.
Morris will represent Douglas County for various speaking engagements over the next year and will move on to compete for Georgia Teacher of the Year honors.
