Chapel Hill’s softball team brings back several seniors from last year’s team that went 14-5 overall and finished second in the region.
Coach Gracie Wentz said her team’s character came through during a comeback win early this season.
“We're excited for the season because our team as a whole brings a lot of strength and a lot of talent and a lot of just pure grit from, like, just last night, coming back from a really low inning. Coming back for the win and fighting together just as a team and as a cohesive unit is really nice to have as a coach,” Wentz said during the DCSS Athletic Media Day on Aug. 7.
Wentz said she trusts her senior battery duo of pitcher Grace Glowacki and catcher Shelbie Hutto to call pitches.
Hutto “brings a lot of knowledge to the game,” and Glowacki “brings a lot of grit, a lot of strength and dedication to our program,” Wentz said.
First baseman Kendra Roberts is talented and brings strength and encouragement to her teammates.
And senior second baseman Sarah Cordle brings what Wentz calls a “sweet energy” to the team and is lights-out in the middle infield.
Glowacki said the team’s ultimate goal is getting to the state tournament in Columbus and making a run at a title.
“We've had a lot of decent showings at state,” Glowacki said. “We've never really been able to get over that last hurdle. So I think that for all of us across the board, it's making it to Columbus and being competitive up there. And I think that, you know, this team brings a lot of heart and a lot of that sort of scrappy energy that we really need to push us through big games.”
