CHMS travel to Greece and Italy

This summer, a group of Chapel Hill Middle School students traveled to Italy and Greece on an educational adventure led by School Counselor and Trip Leader Dr. Laura Moncrief. They visited ancient ruins from Rome to Pompeii and Athens to Delphi, explored beautiful landscapes, including the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, and delved into local culture. Dr. Moncrief reflected on the immersive experience, saying, "Traveling abroad sparks growth and confidence in our students." She explained, "Students who were nervous about traveling independently so far from home soon realized that this journey would change their lives, inspiring them to seize the moment."

In Rome, students visited iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and Vatican City. They also participated in a local tradition by tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain and learning about the original shopping mall at the Roman Forum. A visit to the incredible ruins of Pompeii revealed remnants of what life was like before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. After learning about Pompeii's innovations, such as using shiny rocks as moonlight reflectors to illuminate dark roads, students realized that many of the solutions to problems developed in ancient times still exist today.

During the visit to Greece, students climbed the Acropolis and admired the stunning views of Athens. They explored the magnificence of the Parthenon and wondered where the swooshes at the Temple of Nike were as they connected the ancient goddess' name with the famous brand. Beyond visiting iconic sites, students enjoyed local cuisine, such as gelato, and learned traditional Greek dance steps and how to greet locals using Ciao and Bravo.

This educational experience allowed students to explore and learn beyond the classroom. The cultural connections and lessons learned will continue to shape their perspectives. With memories of the trip still fresh, Dr. Moncrief is excited to plan students' next adventure abroad.
