The first day of school for many DCSS students was overflowing with excitement as students reunited with friends, met their new teachers, and settled into their classrooms. For Sweetwater Elementary School students, it was a first day filled with dignity and pride.
School Resource Officer Michael Fortson proudly demonstrated the art of Flag Folding, ensuring the Sweetwater Knights were highly educated on the special technique and its significance.
“It’s an honor to pass down this tradition and remind students that every fold holds meaning, just as every action they take holds value.”
Principal Tanish Springer praised Officer Fortson for his genuine kindness and devotion to students, highlighting his positive impact on the school community.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to SRO Fortson for dedicating time to educate our students on the importance of respecting and raising the flag. We truly appreciate our SROs for their commitment to teaching, serving, and protecting our community!”
The traditional flag folding ceremony is rich in symbolism and meaning with the first three folds representing life, a belief in eternal life, and honoring the veterans who sacrificed their lives in defense for peace. Each additional fold continues the pattern of respect and tribute, expressing patriotism and gratitude.
Overall, the flag is folded 13 times in remembrance of the original 13 colonies.
