This year's first day of school brought extra excitement to the Special Needs Preschool Program. The LEAP (Learning & Early Assessment for Preschoolers) program, which now operates from two locations—LEAP at the Lake and LEAP at the Shoals—eagerly welcomed excited students, parents, and educators.
Dr. Lamesha Cranford, principal of the LEAP Program, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "The first day of school is always exciting. This year, we are thrilled to have our students return to school. The Douglas County School System has worked hard to bring together all our resources and experience to create an environment where every child can succeed. With this level of support, progress each day can add up to big results."
Dr. Cranford is particularly excited about having all LEAP programs housed in two locations. She explains, "We are excited to have our special education teachers, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists housed in both locations. Their support is monumental to the growth of our students."
The LEAP Center, according to Dr. Cranford, represents Douglas County's commitment to providing the best possible start for all young learners. Colorful decorations and age-appropriate learning spaces inside the LEAP Center welcome the children. Additionally, the new center's facilities include specialized equipment to support sensory, motor, and cognitive development. Consolidating the LEAP programs has also allowed for an expanded typical peer program and the creation of a collaborative team of specialized educators, therapists, and support staff.
The first day of school is just the beginning for the youngest Douglas County scholars. As the school year continues, educators and families eagerly anticipate the growth and development that will take place inside the centers.
