New DCHS teacher Lelani Smith holds up her high school diploma.

Douglas County High School is celebrating a homecoming that highlights its commitment to excellence. Lelani Smith, an academic all-star, returns to her alma mater as the new International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Academic Advisor.

Smith, now 22, has made several remarkable academic achievements, including earning a master’s degree. The first-year educator, who graduated from Douglas County High School just four years ago, exemplifies the advanced learning opportunities the Douglas County School System provides.

As a Douglas County High School student, Smith excelled in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program and earned significant college credit. Her accelerated academic journey saw her complete her undergraduate degree at Kennesaw State University in just two years, followed by a graduate degree from Georgia Tech.

Her experience with the program played a significant role in her rapid academic progress. Smith emphasizes, “The IB Diploma Program is one of the rarest forms of rigorous education available to students in this country. Alongside receiving extensive college credit, one benefit of IB is that it trained me to be an open-minded inquirer and critical thinker.”

However, her appreciation for the program extends beyond the college credits she earned.

“While in the program, we were challenged by the curriculum, our teachers, and each other,” she said.

Smith says she often reflects on how prepared she is for any challenge while progressing through her advanced degrees, thanks to the competencies developed in the IB program.

Now, as an IB Program Advisor, Smith will be able to give back to the program that equipped her with these skills.

Principal Kenja Parks expressed enthusiasm for Smith’s return, stating, “Her journey from student to educator at Douglas County High reflects the quality of our school system. Her success story inspires current students and demonstrates our school system’s reputation for cultivating excellence.”

Principal Parks explains that Smith will support the IB Program by guiding and mentoring current students and helping them navigate the challenges of advanced coursework and college preparation.

As she reflected on her return, Smith shared, “Coming back to my alma mater has already proven to be a rewarding experience. I’m excited to play a big part in the cycle of influence and inspire them to create the life that they want to live.”

A lifelong learner, Smith is already pursuing options for her doctorate. Her commitment to learning reflects her dedication to the school community, which nurtured her academic growth.

“If I can encourage at least one student to have the confidence in themselves that I have in them, then I’ll consider it a job well done.”
