Jonathan Essien

Jonathan Essien, a Douglas County High School student, has been honored with the prestigious national Gates Millennium Scholarship. This scholarship, established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, supports high-achieving, underrepresented students in various fields, including computer science, math, engineering, library science, education, public health, and science. As a recipient of this scholarship, Jonathan will have all his college-related expenses covered at the university or college of his choice. If Jonathan decides to pursue further education, the scholarship will also provide tuition for select graduate school programs.

Principal Kenja Parks says this achievement is a testament to Jonathan’s outstanding academic achievements and commitment to service.

“Jonathan is an outstanding student with a thirst for knowledge," Parks said. "He also possesses a heart for his community. Not only has Jonathan consistently shown excellence in his studies, but he has also actively engaged in volunteer work to uplift those around him.”

Principal Parks says this scholarship not only recognizes his talents but also provides him with the opportunity to pursue his dreams of higher education without a financial burden. She adds that Jonathan’s future is bright, and with the support of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, he joins a group of future leaders poised to make a lasting impact on the world.

Jonathan also participated in Douglas County High School’s National Decision Day. During the event, he declared that for his next steps, he will attend the Gates Scholarship Institute in Arizona this summer and continue his studies at the University of Georgia in the fall.
