Turner Middle School’s rising ninth-grade ESOL students recently got a glimpse into the world of high school at the second annual special orientation program conducted by the DCSS ESOL Department. Spearheaded by ESOL Specialist Cher Algarin and dedicated ESOL High School teachers, this initiative aimed to provide incoming freshmen with a supportive introduction to high school life and academic expectations.
The purpose of the orientation was to ease the transition of ESOL students into the high school environment, and to equip them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed academically. By focusing on the unique needs of English learners, the orientation program addressed potential challenges these students might encounter and offered strategies to effectively navigate their DCSS academic journey.
During the event, students could learn about the different academic programs, organizations and clubs every school offers. They also gained a new perspective on how an ESOL student can be successful and be ready for college and career by asking questions and talking about their personal and academic goals towards higher education.
Principal John Chandler was honored to host such an impactful event for Turner’s ESOL students.
“The Douglas County School System's ESOL Department remains dedicated to empowering ESOL students, fostering their academic and personal growth in an inclusive educational environment where every student can excel," Chandler said. "It's clear that this team of educators are true advocates for our kids, and I was proud to have Turner host this initiative."
