AHS girls track runners

The Alexander High School girls and boys track teams are in the midst of what Coach Jeremy Williams calls an “exceptional year.” The girls finished as region champions and the boys were region runner-ups. A total of 45 athletes qualified for sectionals last weekend and 32 will be competing at state.

Williams is hoping his Cougars can polish off the 2024 campaign with at least one state championship this weekend at Barron Stadium in Rome.

“The athletes have exceeded expectations, and we continue to be one of the favorites to win state,” Williams said. “All year long the kids have worked hard to excel in all of their events and are very supportive of each other. The boys 4x200 set a school record at the county meet and the girls have set the 4x1600 school record at Westminster Relays. Both boys and girls were county champions and have won several meets throughout the year. If all goes well, I believe our girls team will end the year as state champions.”

Williams highlighted several athletes including:

Aseye Srigboh, who qualified for state in four different individual events (high jump, long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles). “Aseye has consistently been our Number 2 jumper in the long and triple jump,” Williams said. “She is one of the favorites to win all three of the jumps as well as be in contention to be the high point scorer at the state meet.”

Alisa Gordon, who won both the long and triple jump at sectionals and is the favorite to win both at the state meet. Gordon is No. 4 all-time in Georgia in the triple jump at 41-9.5. She is the defending state champion in both jumps.

Cayden Guidry, who has lost only two 800 meter races all year and is a favorite to win state.

Justyn McKenzie, who has only lost to Guidry all year.

Emily McDonald, who is currently ranked as the fastest freshman in the state in the 3200 and third fastest freshman in the 1600. “She has run the fastest 1600 for a freshman in the state but it was during a relay,” Williams said. She is also part of the school record 4x1600 team.
