Two photos show Mason Creek students and staff at the White Cane Awareness Walk. At left, a smiling woman stands beside a boy in sunglasses. At right, a girl holds a white cane and raises her fist. Both students wear gray “White Cane Day” T-shirts with braille lettering. Text reads: “Mason Creek Strides with Pride in White Cane Awareness Walk.”

The Mason Creek Elementary School community recently supported individuals with vision loss by participating in the Cam’s Vision White Cane Awareness Walk.

The event took place at Douglasville First United Methodist Church, celebrating the independence of blind or visually impaired individuals and honoring the white cane as a symbol of that independence.

“It was a wonderful time celebrating our Wolf Cubs and all other Douglas County students (including many MAES alums) who navigate the world with a white cane, and an opportunity for those of us who don’t use them to walk in their footsteps,” said Principal Kristin Martin. “We were truly honored to celebrate these amazing students.”

The walk is a reminder to motorists about right-of-way laws and how to safely interact with visually impaired pedestrians.

White Cane Awareness Day is observed on Oct. 15.
