New Manchester High School senior Karis Smith recently earned top awards at

the 17th Annual National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) High School Workshop (JSHOP) in Atlanta. The workshop introduces high school students to careers in journalism and provides opportunities to learn from accomplished media professionals.

During the workshop, Smith connected with professionals across the broadcast, news and media industries, including ESPN, 11Alive, TNT Sports US, TMZ and BeyGOOD, gaining valuable insights into journalism, storytelling, media and the power of purpose-driven work.

Smith received the NABJ JSHOP Top Writer Award in recognition of her exceptional writing ability and storytelling skills.

The award celebrates Smith's “way with words” and encourages her to continue using her voice as a writer and truth-teller. She also received a Certificate of Pride, Accomplishment and Excellence recognizing her work, tenacity and positive attitude throughout the workshop.

At New Manchester High School, Smith is also a FAME actor, a cross country and track athlete, and a member of the Academic Top 10.
