Alexander softball coach Phillip Nasworthy wants to win games — something his team did a lot of last year en route to a region title and state playoff run. But his primary goal runs a lot deeper than wins and losses.

“Our goals don't have anything to do with the win-loss record,” Nasworthy said at the recent DCSS Fall Sports Media Day. “Our goals are to grow as people. Having said that, we want to win every single game we play. That's the expectation more than the goal. Our goal is to become a family and be tighter each day.”

Nasworthy, now in his third year coaching the Lady Cougars, highlighted four players — one from each grade level — at Media Day: senior third baseman Kenzie Townsend, junior center fielder Hannah Harris, sophomore shortstop Alexis May and freshman pitcher Keagan Pounds.

Townsend has started for Alexander during Nasworthy’s entire coaching tenure and brings a strong presence on and off the field, he said. Her four home runs so far this season are second on the team.

Harris is stepping into a leadership role in her junior season, Nasworthy said. She already has five stolen bases and 20 RBI to go with a .373 batting average and .476 on-base percentage.

May is just a sophomore, but Nasworthy called her presence on the field “unmatched.” May has a team-best 12 stolen bases and 24 runs so far to go with a .478 on-base percentage.

And Pounds is Alexander’s No. 1 starter just a year after helping lead Mason Creek Middle School to the county softball championship. She leads the team in batting average (.549), home runs (6), RBI (31), hits (28), slugging percentage (1.157) and on-base percentage (.586). On the mound, she has posted a 2.95 ERA with 96 strikeouts to go with a 10-6 record.

Alexander went 9-2 in its first 11 region games of 2026 heading into Thursday's matchup with New Manchester and currently sits in second place in Region 5-6A.
