Principal 4 a Day Gives Community a Chance to See Principals and Schools In Action!
Posted on 11/25/2019

Spend a day working alongside a principal, and you’ll likely never view the job in the same way again! If you think the top administrator at a school sits in his or her office planning the school’s strategic direction and policy, monitoring finances, managing personnel, focusing on safety, reviewing curricula, and handling discipline issues, you’re  right. Principals do all these things – along with everything else that makes a school run efficiently and safely.

Principals are outside during morning and afternoon carpool making sure everyone is safe; they’re in the hallways during class breaks and in the café during breakfast and lunch making sure students are orderly and on task; they’re responding to parent inquiries in person and email; they’re poring over data to see how their students are performing academically and researching methods for improvement; they’re onsite after hours when students have extracurricular and athletic activities; and the list goes on. If they’re lucky, at some point in the day they manage to grab a bite to eat on the run. More often than not, they love what they do and keep a smile on their face. And they always exceed the number of steps recommended daily on their fitness trackers!

The Principal for a Day (P4AD) program is a partnership between the Douglas County School System, Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, and Brighten Academy. Business and government leaders – and a few parents – participated in the 9th annual P4AD on November 19 and enjoyed a firsthand look at the operations that take place daily in schools. P4AD participants shadowed principals and learned about the many exciting programs offered in our schools while gaining firsthand insight into the challenges that schools face.

Chamber President and CEO, Sara Ray, commented, “Principal 4 a Day continues to be a great experience that our Chamber members truly enjoy. Allowing business leaders to have access to principals is an excellent way for the community to see the needs of each school and to help tell the story of the successes they achieve daily.”

Bankers, business owners, non-profit leaders, clergy, parents, realtors, insurance agents, and elected officials were among those visiting schools as guest principals. Chris Perkins, field representative for the Office of US Senator David Perdue, was P4AD at Eastside Elementary School. “I always appreciate an opportunity to connect with our school systems by participating in the Principal and Teacher for a Day programs,” said Perkins. “These programs allow our office to hear directly from teachers and administrators about how our public education system is working to prepare students for the future.”

“Principal 4 a Day is an excellent opportunity for our community members to visit with principals in our schools and learn more about the quality education we provide and become better acquainted with the learning that takes place every day,” said school system Superintendent Trent North. “We appreciate each leader who took the time to shadow a principal. Our school system is proud to be part of such a caring community.”
