Annette Winn Elementary celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month by focusing on Hispanic art during art class, learning songs in Spanish and English and creating projects and displays.
Students ended the great month with a Hispanic Heritage Wax Museum and talent night. Professional Mexican dancers entertained the crowd, and 3rd grader Teresa Penn and her aunt, Cynthia Barralaga, performed a traditional Mexican dance.
At Beulah Elementary, students spent a fun day immersed in lessons centered around Hispanic activities. They learned to make tamales and tres leches cake.
Art activities included making replicas of repujado, an embossed tin art form that is popular in Mexico. The Chapel Hill High School International
Club assisted by providing templates for the project.
Several parents showed off artifacts, art and clothing from various Latin American countries, and Spanish students from Douglas County High School did salsa dancing with the 5th graders, played soccer and broke open piñatas.
Former dual language students at Beulah who now attend Turner Middle School contributed by preparing some of the materials for activities.
