DCSS Appoints New Leaders

Superintendent Trent North is pleased to announce the following appointments for the Douglas County School System.


Dr. Kacia Thompson will serve as Director of Extended Learning. In this new position, Dr. Thompson will oversee all learning programs that occur outside normal school hours, including all after school programs and summer school. Dr. Thompson will work to establish the curriculum and evaluate the effectiveness of all extended programs in regard to student achievement and learning. 


Dr. Thompson is a veteran DCSS educator, having served in Douglas County since 2005. She most recently served as the coordinator for the district’s 504 and multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) programs. She also served as principal in two schools in Douglas County,  Burnett Elementary and Dorsett Shoals Elementary. “I hope to build partnerships between the community and Douglas County School System in an effort to unite around a common goal of reversing learning loss during summer, improving academic outcomes, and providing enrichment and learning opportunities for all students,” said Dr. Thompson.


Mitch SpringerMitch Springer comes to the Douglas County School System as Area Executive Director, overseeing 12 schools in the system. Mr. Springer has worked in administrative positions in both Carroll County and Carrollton City Schools. He currently serves as principal of Villa Rica Middle School. Mr. Springer anticipates completing his Ed.D degree in middle grades history in 2022. 


“I‘m very excited to work with Mr. North and the excellent team here in Douglas County,” said Mr. Springer. “The great student and community focus is wonderful, and I look forward to contributing to the success and future goals of Douglas County Schools.”
 


Shelly HesterCurrent principal of Dorsett Shoals Elementary, Shelly Hester, has accepted the position of Area Executive Director for the Douglas County School System. She will oversee 12 schools. Ms. Hester has administrative experience in school systems in Douglas and Carroll Counties. She began her career as a teacher in Douglas County in 1995.


"While I will miss the daily interactions with my students, parents, and staff, I am excited to be able to use my passion and experiences to support schools by improving the educational experience for all stakeholders in the Douglas County School System," said Ms. Hester.



Kelly BrownKelly Brown will take over as principal of Dorsett Shoals Elementary. Ms. Brown began her career at Clayton County Schools and has worked in Douglas County since 2006, most recently as assistant principal at Bill Arp Elementary. Ms. Brown holds a master’s degree from University of West Georgia and an educational specialist degree from Mercer University.


“I am so incredibly excited to start this new chapter as principal of Dorsett Shoals Elementary,” said Ms. Brown. “I am eager to get started, and I can’t wait to meet all of the families and staff.”


“I expect all of these individuals who are beginning new roles to take the Douglas County School System to a higher level,” said Superintendent North. “They are all experienced and have a proven track record of success. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years to come.”
